How to Move Headway from One Blog to Another

The headway theme doesn’t have an export option (yet). However, copying over a website isn’t as hard as it sounds. Follow these steps to copy your headway theme exactly from one blog to the next.

How to Copy Headway from One Blog to Another

Before we begin, be sure to install headway on your new blog. This will make transferring the database much easier.

How to Transfer Your Custom Styling

The first thing you should do is download your custom styling files via FTP. Login to your favorite FTP program and download the following two files:

  • custom.css
  • the custom folder

See? Simple. Now just upload these to your new installation and be sure to hit “overwrite.”

How to Transfer Database Tables with Visual Editor Data

The next part is slightly more complicated. Login to your cpanel and navigate to the wordpress database for the site you want to copy. Select “export” from the tabs running across the top and highlight the following tables:

  • wp_headway_elements
  • wp_headway_leafs
  • wp_headway_misc
  • wp_headway_options

[note]The prefix for each table may vary depending on your installation.[/note]

To highlight more than one table, hold CTRL (windows) or CMD (Mac) as you click them. Then select UPDATE from the “Export type” field as shown below:

Also ensure that you’ve selected “save as file” in the rectangular horiztonal box below the export options. It looks like this:

If you have the new site on the same host, navigate to the new database and select import from the tabs running across the top. Then upload your newly created table back-up.

That’s it! Your new Headway install should be an exact copy of your development site. Now just make sure everything is in its place and you’re good to go!

Just got Headway and have been messing around with it.

I was literally just wondering about this exact issue! This is a great fix until there is an export option added.

    Thank You.

If you have the Headway personal option (which only gives you two installs) would installing Headway on your local host and then transferring to a web host when you’re done customizing count as two installs?

Because if it is, then this is not a viable way for me to switch headway from one to another. Is there a way to transfer without the second install? (I have headway on two personal sites, so I don’t have the option of another installation)

I don’t think a local test installation counts.
